Introduction of Truvada Tablet

  • Truvada Tablet is a combination of two antiviral medicine. Truvada Tablet is used to treat Human Immunodeficiency Virus 1 (HIV-1) infection in adults and adolescents aged 12 to less than 18 years who weigh at least 35 kg, and who have already been treated with other HIV medicines that are no longer effective or have caused side effects. Truvada Tablet is also used for safer sex practices for preexposure prophylaxis (PrEP), should always be used in combination with safer sex practices, such as using condoms, to reduce the risk of getting other sexually transmitted infections.

Truvada Tablet reduces the amount of HIV virus in your body and keeps it low. It also increases CD4 cell counts. CD4 cells are a type of white blood cell that plays a vital role in maintaining a healthy immune system to help fight infection. Response to treatment with Truvada Tablet varies between patients. Your doctor or healthcare provider will be monitoring the effectiveness of your treatment.

Truvada Tablet may improve your condition, but it does not cure your HIV infection. HIV infection is a disease spread by contact with blood or sexual contact with an infected individual. Treatment with Truvada Tablet has not been shown to eliminate the risk of passing HIV infection on to others by sexual contact or by blood transfer. Therefore, you must continue to take appropriate precautions to avoid giving the virus to others. During your treatment, other infections linked to your weakened immunity (opportunistic infections) may arise. These will require specific and sometimes preventive treatment.

Do not use Truvada Tablet for pre-exposure prophylaxis in individuals with unknown or positive HIV-1 status. Truvada Tablet should be used in HIV-infected patients only in combination with other antiretroviral agents.

Truvada Tablet may cause some common side effects of this medicine include nausea, diarrhea, headache, trouble sleeping, rash, and dizziness. These are usually not serious but inform your doctor if they bother you or do not go away. It can also increase the risk of bone loss (osteoporosis) if you take it for a long time. Exercise regularly and take calcium and vitamin D supplements as suggested by your doctor. Some people put on weight while taking medicines to treat HIV/AIDS.

Before taking Truvada Tablet, let your doctor know if you have any liver or kidney disease or bone problems. While using it, you may need regular blood tests to check your blood counts, liver function, and kidney function. Since this medicine may cause dizziness or sleepiness, do not drive if you experience these symptoms. Pregnant or breastfeeding women should consult their doctor before using this medicine. Do not have unprotected sex or share personal items like razors or toothbrushes if you are HIV positive. Talk to your doctor about safe ways like condoms to prevent HIV transmission during sex.

Truvada Tablet can be taken with or without food. Swallow the tablet whole with a full glass of water. Do not crush, chew, or open the tablet. If you miss a dose, take it as soon as you remember. If it is almost time for your next dose, skip the missed dose and take the next dose at the regular time. Do not take two doses at the same time to make up for a missed dose.
